What does this test measure?
The Verbal Memory Test assesses your phonological loop—the part of your working memory that handles spoken and written information. It measures how many unique items (words) you can retain while simultaneously processing new incoming information.
How to Play
- Read: A word will appear on the screen (e.g., "HOUSE").
- Decide:
- Click NEW if you have NOT seen this word in the current game yet.
- Click SEEN if the word has appeared before.
- Survive: You have 3 lives. Every mistake costs a life. The game ends when you lose all 3 lives.
What is a good score?
The average score for a first-time player is around 25-35 words. Scores above 50 indicate excellent short-term verbal retention. Scores above 100 are exceptionally rare and typically seen in individuals with superior memory techniques.
Tips to improve
Don't just read the word; visualize it. If the word is "APPLE," imagine a bright red apple in your hand. Associating visual imagery with verbal text creates "dual coding," making it much easier to recall later.
